Dear Linear Community,

As many of you already know, we are in the final stages before launching our integration on the Kusama Network through Moonriver. We are aware that many of you may not be very familiar with Moonriver, which is why we made this short introductory post for those of you.

Relay Chains and Parachains

In order to give a proper introduction to Moonriver, we need to go over a few concepts first. Parachains are project-specific blockchains that are a part of a relay chain responsible for security, consensus, and transaction settlements. In simpler terms, by being a part of the Relay chain, parachains benefit from the larger relay chain’s network characteristics. In this case, Moonriver is the parachain and Kusama is the relay chain.

Parachains allow parameter optimization for specific use cases. For example, parachains can be programmed to:

  • Allow users to perform faster transactions with lower fees
  • Make sure user’s information is not public to the network
  • To not process a big number of transactions when there’s no need for it

Another important concept to grasp are collators. Collators are members of the network that run a full node for a parachain. They help maintain the network by producing state transition proofs for validators on Kusama network. Validators on Kusama are responsible for ensuring finality and are a shared resource for all parachains connected to the relay chain.

Moonriver

Launched in June 2021, Moonriver is intended to work as a canary network to Moonbeam on Polkadot. This means code will initially be tested and verified on Moonriver’s Mainnet under a real economic scenario before making its way onto Moonbeam. Moonriver will be long-lived and will continue to run alongside Moonbeam with its own unique ecosystem and users.

Moonriver’s native utility token, $MOVR will play a key role in the network’s everyday operations. $MOVR token holders will be able to decide on matters such as:

  • The network’s on-chain governance mechanism
  • Transaction fees
  • Smart contract implementation
  • A means to incentivize collators to produce blocks

On top of that, Moonriver is fully compatible with Ethereum. Developers are able to run existing Solidity smart contracts on the network without having to reconfigure. This means that existing Ethereum projects are able to deploy on Moonriver and eventually on Moonbeam by simply replicating their Dapps on the network.

Final Comments

Given that Moonriver will act as Moonbeam’s canary network, our team will first launch on Moonriver and eventually make its way to the Polkadot network via Moonbeam.

Expect more news on this very soon!

Thanks,

Linear Finance Team
